Our flagship short, the Freel has been Outside Magazine’s Gear of the Year and is beloved by mountain bikers everywhere, from the Alps to the Bitterroots. Made with shrub-resistant and mud-deflecting nylon, the Freel is an enduro ready short that seamlessly takes you from the red rocks of Moab to the loamy single track of the PNW. With four-way stretch, deep pockets, and our unique collection of playful prints, the Freel is a beautifully designed short that’s still technical as hell. No compromises, it’s our favorite workhorse.

AVAILABLE IN SIZES: 0-18

*Fit note! As of Spring '22, our Freel has been enhanced with a reinforced waistband which has been tested to combat stretching over time. So if you've sized down in the past, you don't need to continue to do so as these run more true to size.*

Terracotta: Inspired by the pandemic houseplant craze. While we were all stuck inside, we looked for a little bit of outside to bring us comfort and joy. Our love of house plans has not subsided.

Paradise: This print was inspired by all the tropical vacations we were missing. The fauna of our favorite island destinations!

Road Trip: There’s nothing quite like a road trip given the state of the world we were really relishing in these hand-drawn adventure vehicles.

Forest Fungi: A whimsical take on the fungi that grows in the thick forests of the northwest, adapted to give an abstract pattern on your new favorite bike short.

Porcupette:  We couldn't have a spring release without one of our favorite animal doodles. At the time of design, we were all feeling a little prickly while being housebound for far too many months!

Ginkgo Jade: It wouldn't be a Wild Rye bike short if it didn't have a botanical option. A symbol of longevity and endurance, the ginkgo leaf pattern is a nod to emerging out of a few long hard years and the ever-expansive opportunities and future spreading out before us.

Wild Thing Sea Glass: This is a new take on one of our all-time favorite patterns, Wild thing. Inspired by leopard print, this anything-but-basic pattern is brought back with a refreshing and energizing green.

Sawtooth Mocha: Inspired by one of our favorite mountain ranges in Idaho, our home state, this print captures the expanse and unbridled wild of the Mountain West.

Perfect

As usual my shorts were a great fit and pattern. I always get compliments on how they fit and look.

Freel bike short

I like the shorts but they ran way too small on me. I passed them on to a very slender friend and they were too small on her too. I wonder if they were a mis size? I am a solid 4 in most shorts (Patagonia bike shorts, Majola, Pearl and others)

Might want to size up

I have the Freyah pants in size 8, and they fit perfectly so I ordered the same size in these shorts. They are just a tad too small. It seems most people are saying they are true to size, but I would suggest ordering up a size.

Best bike short

I can't believe how comfortable this short is. I forgot all about it the first time I wore it, which is saying a lot for new bike shorts. The size does not run small at all, and the stretch makes for a very comfortable fit and ride. I ordered a size 12 and it is not at all tight. I measure at a 10 or 12 but sometimes order 14 when I want my clothes to be roomy or want a lot of room for movement, and I have plenty of room in the size 12.

Nice shorts, but inner waist adjustment would make them about perfect.

I always loved the look of Wild Rye clothing but didn't buy any until the sale. No returns so I was really hoping for the best with sizing...and there wasn't time to try to contact the company with fit questions. Based on some of the existing reviews, I got a size 6 though I normally wear a 4. My waist measures about 28, hips about 36. The shorts fit how I prefer overall (not skin tight) but are loose around the waist...probably an inch too big (despite being a size 6 based on size chart). Waist adjustment would be nice for those or us who like a looser fit overall but still want to feel like the shorts are snug around the waist. I would say these probably run true to size compared to other clothing, but run large if going off the size chart (at least as far as waist measurement goes). I will use still use them (esp with a chamois underneath), but wish the waist fit better.
