We don’t believe in compromise, which is why we made the Kaweah women’s mountain bike short: a do-everything, go-anywhere short that will keep you on the bike during those long summer evenings or chilly fall mornings. The Kaweah is designed with a durable 90% recycled poly/10% spandex blend to give you a breathable mountain bike short that wicks sweat while moving with your pedal stroke. A DWR finish ensures that even the muddiest puddles won’t dampen your style.

Now available in GIRLS sizing - shop Kaweah Girls now.

Note: the Kaweah is a slimmer cut with less stretch than the Freel, so when in doubt, size up! If you're looking for a short that accommodates a curvier body, we'd always recommend the Freel over the Kaweah.

The Kaweah prints bring some extra detail compared to the Freel with our popular poppy print in a subdued midnight version, a recoloration of our popular Geometry Class, a fresh take on island life in our new Isla print and finally our retro-inspired disco dahlia print!

You might be wondering what the difference is between the Kaweah and Freel. The two shorts share a lot in common: water repellency, a great fit, phenomenal style, and durability. The main differences you’ll find are in the fabric and thus the price! The Kaweah is a polyester blend, while the Freel is nylon. If you buy shorts from any of our fellow MTB loving brands, you’ll be familiar with a polyester short. It’s the workhorse. If you're still not sure how to pick the best shorts for you, check out our new Kaweah vs Freel comparison chart, here.

Wild Rye ships via USPS (yep, we’re buying up as many stamps as possible to do our part to save the US Postal Service) - please provide your PO Box address if that is how you get your mail (talking to you mountain town people!)

We offer a 30 day return / exchange policy from ship date. Final sale items are noted in the product description - these items cannot be returned for any reason. Full details here.

We're women (and girls!). We have curves in many different places. We have long legs. We have short legs. We have booties. We have athletic legs. Fit is hard. We do our very best to keep our products true to size so you can count on your order fitting your body! That said, fit is the hardest part of running an apparel business. Super cute, sizing way off

I will start saying I love Wild Rye brand and will continue to support the business. I originally purchased a pair of shorts (size 8) last year - they were way too small, so I chalked it up to needing to size up. So I purchased the Freya pants last fall, size 10 - they fit, but a pretty baggy/loose (super love these pants). So this year, I figured I would try to buy another pair of shorts (size 10) and same thing - ran really small, so small that I could have sized up even more. Seems to be no continuity in the sizing between the shorts and pants, unfortunately.

Smooth fabric, cute on

I mostly have the Freel shorts but decided to try the kaweah in the disco dahlia print. I like that that print is woven into the fabric. With my thigh rub and the bike seat, I have worn some of the print on my Freel’s.
I have thick thighs and wear a chamois but liked the little more fitted look of the kaweah short. In the last generation of the Freels, I wore a size 6, now I had to go for a 8 and I also did 8 in the kaweah. I wear a 6 in the Freyah pants. The kaweah in an 8 fit well but I do have a little back gap. I don’t notice that when riding but I also wear a hip pack. I am usually a 6-8 street size.

I don’t even bike!

I was looking for a summer Bermuda short and couldn’t find anything. I saw these shorts and was afraid to spend money on a bike short since I ride very infrequently and wanted something for everyday.
Anywho. I’m in love. I’m a bigger/curvy girl but these fit great. Maybe a little low on the plumber line, but that’s the story of my backside.
They work for the river and the trail and go right out for happy hour. The material sheds water so when I’m open too kayaking my legs aren’t soaked and they dry quickly when they go get wet. If they had a back pocket I’d probably never take them off!

Not true to size

Size down. Fabric feels good but run way bigger than size chart suggests. If between sizes go down at least one size.
