Kaweah | Women's Bike Short
AVAILABLE IN SIZES 0-18
We don’t believe in compromise, which is why we made the Kaweah women’s mountain bike short: a do-everything, go-anywhere short that will keep you on the bike during those long summer evenings or chilly fall mornings. The Kaweah is designed with a durable polyester/elastane blend to give you a breathable mountain bike short that wicks sweat while moving with your pedal stroke. A DWR finish ensures that even the muddiest puddles won’t dampen your style.
Note: the Kaweah is a slightly slimmer cut with less stretch than the Freel, so when in doubt, size up!
The Kaweah prints bring some extra detail compared to the Freel with our popular Ranunculus print (an all-season print, not just for base layers) and mountain-town-Milky-Way-inspired Constellation (It’s back! Can you spot the Wild Rye mountains?)
You might be wondering what the difference is between the Kaweah and Freel. The two shorts share a lot in common: water repellency, a great fit, phenomenal style, and durability. The main differences you’ll find are in the fabric and thus the price! The Kaweah is a polyester blend, while the Freel is nylon. If you buy shorts from any of our fellow MTB loving brands, you’ll be familiar with a polyester short. It’s the workhorse. If you're still not sure how to pick the best shorts for you, check out our new Kaweah vs Freel comparison chart, here.
Wild Rye ships via USPS (yep, we’re buying up as many stamps as possible to do our part to save the US Postal Service) - please provide your PO Box address if that is how you get your mail (talking to you mountain town people!)
We offer a 30 day return / exchange policy from ship date. Final sale items are noted in the product description - these items cannot be returned for any reason. Full details here.

I really like the color of these Poppy K shorts.. teal greenish . Looks good with the mustard yellow top too. I’ve purchased the Freel shorts in the past , but this is my first pair of Kaweah because I really wanted the Poppy ! I’m in between a 4 and a 6 in Freel so I sized up as recommended to an 8 in the Kaweah….They are too big. Size 6 would have been better. I got them on sale so I can’t return. I just have to wear my awesome belt ( also purchased from Wild Rye). I’ve worn them two times and I do like the feel of the fabric and they wash up great. Giving 4 stars because of the fit.
I love the fabric, print and large zipper pocket on right side of shorts. However, for those with larger hip to waist ratio, while the large fits my hips and buttocks, the waist gapes at the back and there are no adjusters to make this smaller. That would be a nice addition to the short!
True to size. Excellent craftsmanship, comfortable fabric in catchy designs. The style/cut is perfect and very comfortable.
Full disclosure, it says to size up. I sized up and those are even slim. Love the prints, pockets and length, but might consider a second size up next time.
Love the beautiful fun print and sturdy construction. At first I was surprised by how thick the fabric is and was skeptical that it'd be breathable. But, at the same time, I really like how durable the fabric seems. After wearing them on a long dusty mountain ride the other day, I loved them even more and they did seem to live up to their breathable, wicking promise. Based on reviews and the product description, I sized up (I ordered a 6 instead of a 4), which turned out to be unnecessary (a 4 would have fit me better). Despite being lose in the waist, these shorts are seriously comfortable so I decided to keep them. I'm 5'3" 123lbs with an athletic build.
